How to Play
Powerball is a multistate lottery game offered in 43 states, Washington D.C., and the US Virgin Islands.
One panel equals one play.
One play cost $2.00.
You can play up to 10 panels per ticket.
Choose Your Numbers
On the Powerball playslip, select 5 white balls from numbers 1 to 59 in the upper play area.
In the lower play area select your red Powerball from numbers 1 to 35.
Or if you don't want to choose your own numbers, mark "Easy Pick" on the playslip and the computer will randomly pick your numbers.
Choose Your Power Play
Non-jackpot prizes can be increased when you select the Power Play box on your playslip.
If you play Powerball with Power Play and match all 5 white balls, you win $2,000,000!
Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m.
When you've filled out your playslip, take it to any Michigan Lottery retailer with the amount of the wager. Your numbers will be entered in the next drawing and you will receive a game ticket.
ALWAYS check your playslip before giving it to the Lottery clerk. Tickets cannot be canceled after they are issued, and responsibility for accuracy of your numbers, multi-draw options and payment options rests with you, not the Lottery.
Tickets may be purchased until 9:45 p.m. on the night of the drawing. Tickets purchased after that time will be eligible for the next drawing.
You can play Powerball for up to 30 consecutive drawings. Just mark the number of drawings you want in the multiple-draw wagers area on the playslip.

Cash Option and Annuity Payments
The Michigan Lottery can pay Powerball jackpot winnings in one of two ways: as an annuity or in one lump-sum/cash-option payment for the present cash value of the jackpot share. When a winner selects annuity payments, the jackpot is paid out in installments over 29 years (30 payments). When a winner selects Cash Option, the Lottery pays the winner the present cash value of the announced jackpot in one lump-sum payment. In effect, the Lottery takes all of the money that would have been invested to fund the 29-year annuity and turns it all over to the winner, retaining absolutely none of the prize.
Regardless of which option the winner selects, the Michigan Lottery is required by law to withhold estimated income taxes for federal (25 percent) and state (4.35 percent), on any prize over $5,000. These amounts are estimates only, and the winner is required to satisfy any further tax liability for the year in which the prize award is claimed.
Shared Jackpots
Each winning person would receive equal parts of the jackpot. Those selecting Cash Option would receive the Present Cash Value of their share.

Tax Information on Michigan Lottery Prizes
Michigan Lottery prizes are subject to federal, state and local income taxes. You may be required to make estimated tax payments by filing a form 1040ES with the Internal Revenue Service. If you have questions regarding income tax, please contact the Internal Revenue Service at (800) 829-1040, the Michigan Department of Treasury at (517) 636-4486, or your local taxing authority.
The Michigan Lottery provides winning Lottery clubs with a blank Substitute 5754 form. Lottery clubs must submit a completed Substitute 5754 form at time of prize payment.
- Substitute 5754 form (BSL-A-2164)
- Instructions for Substitute 5754 form (BSL-A-2164-Instructions)
- Instructions on how to form a lottery club
All winners claiming individual prizes of more than $600 will receive a W-2G form at time of prize payment for the purposes of completing their yearly tax return.
Following are some additional facts on Lottery withholding guidelines:
Prizes up to $600: The Lottery does not withhold any taxes.
Prizes from $601 to $5,000: The Lottery does not withhold any taxes but is required to report the winnings to the IRS and Michigan Department of Treasury. The winner will then be required to report the income in the tax year it is claimed.
Prizes over $5,000: For any Michigan Lottery prize over $5,000, the Lottery is generally required to withhold an estimated 25 percent in federal tax and 4.25 percent in state tax. These withholdings do not necessarily satisfy a winner's tax liability; they are simply estimates. We recommend that all winners contact the IRS, Michigan Department of Treasury and trusted tax professionals to determine whether additional tax payments will be required.
Non-Michigan U.S. residents: All prizes over $5,000 are subject to 25 percent federal tax and 4.25 percent state tax withholding regardless of the state of residence. Questions regarding this state tax withholding should be directed to the Michigan Department of Treasury, taxpayer assistance division.
Non-U.S. residents: Players who win a Michigan Lottery prize greater than $600 and do not live in the United States are subject to a 30 percent federal tax withholding rate as well as the 4.25 percent state withholding rate.
